We are now almost a month into 2014 and it would seem that things are off to a better start than the way 2013 ended off. So how is your business shaping up in 2014?
It won’t be long until April when Microsoft ceases updating and patching Windows XP. Are you sure you don’t have any Windows XP machines hanging around? Sure? It is amazing where old machines turn up. Most lie totally forgotten and neglected until a major event like a migration occurs – the problem is that these don’t occur that regularly, so now is a good time to take inventory of what you actually have connected to your network and ensure that you don’t have something that could compromise the security of your network.
We also find many businesses are trying to come to terms with the explosion of people wanting to use their own phones and tablets to work with inside a business. This “bring your own device” (BYOD) trend provides major security challenges for an organization around how they control access to their information. If you haven’t started seeing this issue yet within your business it will only be a matter of time before you do. In both cases it is important that you tackle the challenge sooner rather than later because the trend towards mobility is only going to increase.
Perhaps another aspect of technology that you should be considering carefully is your broadband connection to the Internet? Now that you are probably conducting more business over the Internet and relying on it much more heavily it is worth regularly revisiting whether your pipe to the Internet is adequate or actually constraining your business. In many cases you will find it is actually cheaper to upgrade to a faster and more reliable service than remain on what you currently have.
