Do you have a digital style guide?

Most businesses today produce a wealth of digital information. It is however amazing to see how different this material is. The differences occur with things like fonts, colours, layout and so on. Implementing a digital style guide will overcome this and provide more consistency when it comes to producing digital assets.

The most likely situation inside a business when it comes to creating content is that people use the defaults they are presented with or, more rarely, they have their own preferred defaults. Provided document guidance on what fonts to use in each situation along with other elements such as colours and graphics go a long way to ensuring a consistent message is produced inside and outside the business.

A style guide could be something as simple as a Word document but perhaps a better method of achieving this is to use something like OneNote to make it easier for people to location information about the elements they require since information can more easily be broken out in sections and pages.

Once the style in guide is in place the next step is to look at developing the required Office application templates that contain all the approved design elements so it is easy for users to create the documents they need in the required style. If you want your style guide to be adopted and used widely throughout the organisation you must make it easy for users to follow the guidelines.

A digital style guide is the first step towards a consistent look and feel for your business across documents, spreadsheets, web sites and so on. It relies on first documenting the required elements such as fonts and colours. Once this has been documented the elements need to be integrated into a variety of templates that people can use across the organisation.
