Connecting to desktop applications

One of the benefits that SharePoint Online provides is the ability to connect with familiar desktop applications like Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

You can see this ability directly in the ribbon menu in SharePoint under the Connect and Export section.

For example if you select the Connect to Outlook button you will prompted with some security confirmation dialogs, but eventually you will see the area listed under SharePoint Lists in your normal Outlook folder hierarchy as shown above.

If you click on a SharePoint List you will then see the items display on the right as you can see above. You can now work on SharePoint directly from Outlook.

SharePoint should be seen as an extension of the tools that are available with your desktop Office software. It is the tool to bring all this information together and provided a centralised hub for collaboration.
